Working very closely with nature "en plein air," on location has led Richard to a much greater appreciation of the natural world around him. Richard McKinley was born in the Rogue Valley of Oregon and spent his youth growing up in this special place.  His goal is to capture a piece of the spontaneous dance of light across the palette of nature. He feels that working on location forces him to get in touch with the moment allowing no time for detailed studies. His time is divided between painting, teaching, and writing.
This plein air workshop will cover the basics of sound representational painting. There will be demonstrations, critiques, and personal attention at individual easels.  Primarily pastel with mixed media underpainting.  Beginner to professional.  Main workshop hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Each student must provide and carry their personal and painting supplies.  Plein air locations may not be close to your vehicle; some walking will be required.  Transportation and lodging is not provided and is the responsibility of the participant.  Richard will paint into the evenings at his own easel; participants may paint into the evening or opt to leave after the normal class day.  Some painting locations may not be located near the New Brighton Family Center and will require travel (i.e. southeastern Twin Cities).  At some painting locations, restrooms may be a short drive away.  Further information will be provided with registration or on the first day of class.  If you have questions about your ability to participate, please contact a workshop coordinator listed below.

Tuition is $505 for the 5-day courseApplications must be submitted with a deposit of $100.  Balance must be received by July 1, 2010*Prompt registration preferred to guarantee your space in the workshop (participants limited to 18) and confirm our commitment to this artistFor cancellations on or before July 1, 2010, a $50 cancellation fee will be assessed.  Cancellation after July 1, 2010 will result in forfeiture of the entire fee unless the space can be filled with a student from the waiting list, in which case a $100 cancellation fee will be assessed.
